Ia merupakan keton yang paling sederhana. Aseton larut dalam berbagai perbandingan dengan air, etanol, dietil eter,dll. Ia sendiri juga merupakan pelarut yang penting. Aseton digunakan untuk membuat plastik, serat, obat-obatan, dan senyawa-senyawa kimia lainnya. Selain dimanufaktur secara industri, aseton juga dapat ditemukan secara alami, termasuk pada tubuh manusia dalam kandungan kecil.
Aseton dibuat secara langsung maupun tidak langsung dari propena. Secara umum, melalui proses kumena, benzena dialkilasi dengan propena dan produk proses kumena(isopropilbenzena) dioksidasi untuk menghasilkan fenol dan Aseton:
C6H5CH(CH3)2 + O2 → C6H5OH + OC(CH3)2
Konversi di atas terjadi melalui zat antara kumena hidroperoksida, C6H5C(OOH)(CH3)2.
Aseton juga diproduksi melalui propena yang dioksidasi langsung dengan menggunakan katalis Pd(II)/Cu(II), mirip seperti 'proses wacker'.
Dahulu, aseton diproduksi dari distilasi kering senyawa asetat, misalnya kalsium asetat. Selama perang dunia I, sebuah proses produksi aseton dari fermentasi bakteri dikembangkan oleh Chaim Weizmann dalam rangka membantu Britania dalam usaha perang. Proses ini kemudian ditinggalkan karena rendahnya aseton butanol yang dihasilkan.
Cairan pembersih
Aseton sering kali merupakan komponen utama (atau tunggal) dari cairan pelepas cat kuku. Etil asetat, pelarut organik lainnya, kadang-kadang juga digunakan. Aseton juga digunakan sebagai pelepas lem super. Ia juga dapat digunakan untuk mengencerkan dan membersihkan resin kaca serat dan epoksi. Ia dapat melarutkan berbagai macam plastik dan serat sintetis.
Ia sangat baik digunakan untuk mengencerkan resin kaca serat, membersihkan peralatan kaca gelas, dan melarutkan resin epoksi dan lem super sebelum mengeras.
Selain itu, aseton sangatlah efektif ketika digunakan sebagai cairan pembersih dalam mengatasi tinta permanen.

Aseton dapat melarutkan berbagai macam plastik, melipuri botol Nalgene yang dibuat dari polistirena, polikarbonat, dan beberapa jenis poliprolilena.[2]

Oleh karena polaritas aseton yang menengah, ia melarutkan berbagai macam senyawa. Sehingga ia umumnya ditampung dalam botol cuci dan digunakan sebagai untuk membilas peralatan gelas laboratorium.
Walaupun mudah terbakar, aseton digunakan secara ekstensif pada proses penyimpanan dan transpor asetilena dalam industri pertambangan. Bejana yang mengandung bahan berpori pertama-tama diisi dengan aseton, kemudian asetilena, yang akan larut dalam aseton. Satu liter aseton dapat melarutkan sekitas 250 liter asetilena
